"Shardling" is a common term for a rare kind of sentient green crystal from the Elemental Plane of Earth known more professionally as "psirock" that can absorb and redirect psionic energy. They may be small and weak alone, but in groups their psionic powers are greatly enhanced. When their physical bodies are destroyed, their minds retreat to the Plane of Earth and then form new crystals.
