Survivor of the Depths

You did not come from the sunlit, verdant world of the surface. Your home was the vast and dark abyssal plains, the unfathomable trenches where light never reached, or perhaps the shadowy realms of the Plane of Water. You were shaped by crushing pressure, constant cold, and the primordial law of hunt or be hunted. Your arrival in the surface world might be a mission, an exile, an insatiable curiosity, or an escape from an even greater danger that rose from the darkest depths. Your ways are strange to others, and you view the world through the relentless perspective of a predator who survived where only the most adapted thrive.
Skill Proficiencies: Survival, Nature
Tool Proficiencies: One type of artisan's tools of your choice (e.g., underwater smithing tools, bone carver's tools) or navigator's tools
Languages: One additional language of your choice
Equipment: A hunting trophy bag filled with mementos from your prey (teeth, scales, a small vial of abyssal water), a set of traveler's clothes, a set of dark, practical clothes, and a pouch containing 15 GP.

Feature: Secrets of the Depths

Having grown up in such a hostile and unique environment, you possess an innate knowledge of the dangers and secrets of the underwater and subterranean world. You can accurately recall or deduce the location of entrances to underwater caves, subterranean tunnels, or hidden bodies of water. Additionally, you can easily identify aquatic and abyssal creatures and know how to find shelter and basic resources in cavernous and dark environments, as long as there is a source of water nearby.

Suggested Characteristics

Personality Traits (d8)

1I am extremely patient. I would rather observe for hours than act rashly.
2I have a habit of assessing everything and everyone in terms of their potential as a threat, prey, or ally.
3Quiet and darkness comfort me. Noisy, brightly lit places make me anxious.
4I collect shiny or glittering things I find on my travels.
5I speak little and directly, often forgetting the complexities of surface "etiquette."
6I feel a deep and painful nostalgia whenever I see the sea or a dark lake.
7I am incredibly protective of those I consider my "shoal" (my companions).
8I have an almost childlike fascination with simple surface things like the sun, rain, or trees.

Ideals (d6)

1Adaptation. The only constant in the universe is change. We must adapt to survive. (Neutral)
2Community. Alone, we are prey. Together, we are an impenetrable shoal. (Good)
3Strength. The strong make the rules. This is the primordial law of the depths. (Evil)
4Curiosity. I came to the surface to discover all its secrets, no matter the danger. (Chaotic)
5Mission. My people sent me with a purpose, and nothing will divert me from it. (Lawful)
6Freedom. I escaped the constraints of depth society to live as I choose on the surface. (Any)

Bonds (d6)

1I must find a lost sacred artifact from my underwater city that was stolen by surface raiders.
2A great monster from the depths destroyed my home. I live to become strong enough to avenge it.
3I was exiled for a crime I did not commit, and I seek to prove my innocence to return home.
4A member of the party saved me from a trap on dry land. My life now belongs to them.
5A terrible secret slumbers in the depths of my old home, and I must prevent it from being awakened.
6I long to find others of my kind on the surface and establish a new home for us.

Flaws (d6)

1My predatory perspective makes me see other sentient beings as potential prey.
2I am extremely territorial and become hostile if anyone touches my things or invades my space.
3I have a paralyzing fear of fire and fire magic.
4I lie and manipulate easily, for in the darkness, information is the best weapon.
5I am prone to claustrophobic attacks in tight, dry spaces. I prefer the vastness of the ocean.
6I constantly underestimate the "weak" surface folk and their "primitive" technologies.
